Reviving Spiritual Tourism: How Temple Renovation Boosts Uttarakhand’s Economy
The state of Uttarakhand is renowned as the “Land of Pilgrims”. Uttarakhand has an important spiritual significance in India which also contributes towards the economic growth of this state. For many centuries, Uttarakhand has been known as the most popular pilgrimage destination for many people across the nation especially Hindus looking for taking blessings from sacred temples. Most people come to this state for Chardham yatra (containing four religious places, namely Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri) to seek blessings and also to witness Panch Prayag which is a confluence of different rivers in 5 sites which results in the formation of river Ganga. River Ganga is the most worshipped and sacred river in India. Along with this tourist also comes to visit other important religious places such as Bageshwar Dham, Baijnath, Joshinath and many other religious places. But in the last few decades, it has been seen that there is a rapid decline in the number of tourists in the state which has also affected the economy of the state. The reasons for the decline in the number of tourists can be many including inadequate maintenance, poor infrastructure of temples (mainly ancient temples) and lack of amenities. By understanding the challenges government of Uttarakhand has decided to take essential measures mainly including Ancient Temple Renovation.
Giving new meaning to ancient sites
Uttarakhand is full of magnificent ancient places which are not only beautiful or important for religious purposes, but also have some significant importance in art, learning, festivals and community gatherings. Most people come to this state for spiritual tourism. Temples not only serve as the pride of communities, but they also generate a good amount of wealth for communities living in that place. But such important temples are mainly targeted for destruction and foreign invasion. Such activities have largely affected the beauty of many temples. The renovation project of the temple aims to improve the overall structure of the temple and also to preserve its historical importance. This helps in making temples more appealing and accessible to pilgrims. Below are the three important steps taken by the government to preserve the ancient temples and sites:
Infrastructure improvements: These include upgrading roads, enhancing connectivity, and ensuring sanitisation of temples.
Modern Amenities: The government is also focusing on improving the amenities of temples such as cleaning restrooms and constructing cloakrooms for pilgrims who require special care.
Temple restoration: Preservation of architectural heritage by performing necessary renovation and repair of temples.
Current Scenario
The government of Uttarakhand has already implemented various projects for Ancient temple renovation across the state. Out of this one of the major projects currently undergoing in Uttarakhand is “Shiva Circuit”. Under this project, the government of Uttarakhand is joining all major Lord Shiva temples in the state. Apart from providing modern amenities to tourists, the Uttarakhand government aims to restore the architectural heritage of 23 selected Lord Shiva temples. As per the survey conducted by the government of India each year, more than 3.5 million tourists visit the state of Uttarakhand. Out of which nearly about 44.2% of people come for pilgrimage in major areas like Haridwar, Hemkund Sahib, Char Dham, Piran-Kaliyar and various other temples. The temples included in this project are Bagnath Mahadev Temple, Kranteshwar Mahadev Temple, Patal Bhuvaneshwar Temple, Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple, Koteshwar Mahadev Temple, Kedarnath Mahadev Temple, Tunganath Mahadev temple and many others. This will cover different areas of Uttarakhand including Bageshwar, Champawat, Pithoragarh, Kedarnath, Chopta, Uttarkashi, Haridwar, and various other religious places. The main reason for connecting all the temples is to make it easy for the visitors to understand the importance and significance of these temples and how they are connected. The visitor must understand the beliefs behind each temple as well as their religious significance. This is the reason for forming a circuit between all temples of Lord Shiva in Uttarakhand.
Other major projects
After the abolishment of Article 370 PM Modi has launched an initiative for renovating many major ancient temples across the nation, including Uttarakhand. One such project launched by the government is the Char Dham project, which aims to build connectivity between 4 Holy towns including Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. This project aims to build a national highway for connecting those holy towns. By the end of 2023, the government has already constructed 601 km of Highway out of 825 km. The government has given₹11,700 crore for this project and this project will be completed by the end of this year.
Apart from this government is also working on the construction and restoration of various other temples. Recently Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, CM Dhami granted Rs.1 crore for the restoration of a few temples, which include Harju Temple, Chandika Devi Temple and Nileshwar Temple. This fund is also used for the renovation of Dangleshwar Temple located near Satpuli. CM of Uttarakhand has also granted a fund of a total of Rs. 88.17 lahks for Dehradun temples. Additionally, for Hedimba Devi Temple located in Halduwasahu, the government has announced nearly Rs. 82.67 lakh for its beautification. Chief Minister Dhami also granted Rs. 82.67 lakh for the development of a new room and Auditorium in Raghunath Mandir Gurudwara colony, Dehradun. The government has also granted Rs. 48.5 lahks to the Dharchula assembly constituency for the purification and construction of the Panchkoti Devi Temple. For the renovation of the Bajyan Temple and Alakhnath Temple of Bagheswar region the Kapkot Assembly Constituency has also received funds from the government. Lastly, a total of Rs. 73.3 lakh was also allocated by the government for the renovation of the Ladhondhura fair site which comes under Champawat assembly consistency. These are the various temples in Uttarakhand which have been allocated money by the government for their beautification and renovation.
Positive impact of temple renovation
Renovation of temples in Uttarakhand has proven to be responsible for the growth of the state, bringing prosperity and enhancing the economy by increasing more number of tourists. Here are the benefits of renovation of temples in Uttarakhand:
Increased number of tourists
The most important benefit of renovation is that it attracts a large number of tourists and pilgrims. Most importantly improved accessibility and facilities to the temples make it easier for the visitors to travel. For example, Kedarnath is one of the topmost destinations for many people globally. Back in the year 2013, the Kedarnath shrine underwent complete reconstruction after the disaster, which took the lives of many visitors. In the year 2019, it was again renovated by the government which increased the number of visitors to 7 lakhs. The increase in the inflow of tourists directly results in a surge in state revenue. Many small businesses such as tour guides, transportation service providers and travel agencies also benefit from this inflow of visitors in the state.
Job creation
One of the major benefits of renovation projects is that it help in creating more job opportunities for local people. Many architects, engineers and construction workers find employment because of renovation projects. Moreover, a higher number of tourists in the state increases the demand for tourism and hospitality sectors. For example, hotels and restaurants require more staff members including chefs. Whereas the travel agencies also benefit from the increase in number of visitors in the state. This increase in job opportunities helps in improving the economy of the state.
Increase in local businesses
The increasing number of pilgrims not only provides benefits to the government or state, but it also helps to empower small businesses mainly local businesses. This includes local shops, restaurants and hotels providing traditional souvenirs to visitors. For example, in Badrinath renovation has been done to improve the marketplace and sanitation facilities. This has resulted in a large number of visitors which indirectly helps to flourish, local markets. This helps the local shopkeepers to generate a good amount of income. This all contributes towards the economic growth of the state.
Infrastructure development
The government not only focuses on the renovation of temples but also provides funding for surrounding infrastructure. It includes the reconstruction of multiple roads, public transport and roads. The fundraising for temple renovation is done both by local people and the government. The improvement in infrastructure of the state helps to bring more tourists which ultimately helps to increase connectivity of the state with other areas. For example, Yamunotri Temple’s renovation project also included the construction of a new highway so that people could easily travel, and it also saved most of the time of locals and pilgrims. By increasing the growth of tourism, promoting the development of infrastructure and creating job opportunities, the renovation projects play an important role in boosting the economy of the state. Thus, resulting in a prosperous future. By restoring spiritual tourism, the Uttarakhand government is helping to preserve the cultural heritage of the state and also forming a sustainable model for the future. This initiative by the government demonstrates the positive impact of renovation projects on the cultural identity and economic growth of the region.
Conclusion
The renovation project of temples in Uttarakhand serves as a prime example for many other states which have spiritual significance. The modernisation and restoration of sacred temples in this region help to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage and legacy while boosting the economy of the state. Renovating and building temples helps in bringing spirituality and devotion among people living in India and increasing spiritual tourism. As India is regarded as the land of the oldest civilisation and Hinduism or Sanathan Dharma is regarded as its gatekeeper, therefore it becomes important to save its heritage.
